The Twilight Pilgrims
Those who walk
The people of the Twilight Line, with no government: each village has its well council. Perhaps fifteen to twenty thousand people live along the Line: goatherds, miners of old bronze, automaton builders, astronomers without an observatory, and the walkers proper. “Pilgrim” is both the name of the people and the name for one who walks. The Line belongs to no one, they say: it was land “for people who didn’t fit on either side”.
They have no gods. They trust in time and balance, and distrust both heavenly bodies; at most a Pilgrim asks the Sun and the Moon not to notice him. The Breaking proved them right: both woke up hungry, and the Line was left in the middle. Their oldest law is not written down: whoever drinks from your well sleeps under your roof.
Ashford has burned and Highstone is abandoned. Families flee west with their goats.
