Stillrock
“Stillrock hung suspended between fire and ice, held by two kids with their hands on each other’s chests.”
Stillrock sits in a sheltered hollow at the foot of the tower’s hill, at the end of the path that winds down from the tower door: twenty stone houses with turf roofs around a well, smoke in the chimneys, and goats being brought in at the end of the day. The village is on no road; armies pass it by. Its stone is better than that of other villages on the Line, because it came down the hill from the Clockmakers’ houses that emptied one by one over the centuries.
On night 31, between the fire of the Sun and the ice of the Moon, Stillrock was saved by two kids with their hands on each other’s chests. It lost six people, among them Lia, who died halfway up the tower road. The six were buried on day 32.
