The Hierarch, Cassiano IV
Keeper of the Sleeping Light
Cassiano IV is eighty-three and has been Hierarch since 961, a thirty-nine-year pontificate. On becoming Hierarch he renounced the name of his house, Valerio. His apartments lie in the Temple of the Zenith, behind the pulpit.
His is the voice of the sleeping light: “The light chooses. We merely obey.” After the Breaking he declares the dead “Shades”, and the priests undo them each morning. He remains in Auren, growing frailer.
