Master Halvar

Halvar was born in the tower in 919 and has never left it. He is a clockmaker by trade, and also an automaton builder, an astronomer and, by necessity, a doctor. He watches over and sets right the tower bound to the Astrolabe: “The sky is always running late. I set it right.” He is eighty-one.

On the Full Night he launched the Equinox, and it cost him years: his body looks over ninety now, he gets about in a wheelchair, and his right hand is bandaged to the elbow. The tower is beating again, and the broken model points to the twelve Shards. He stays in the tower “to keep this thing wound” while the others leave.
